Greg Howard and Friends – March 27, 2010 – 8pm
by admin on Mar.01, 2010, under Workshops
Stick player Greg Howard and Friends
Saturday, March 27, 8:00 pm – The Sound, 946 Grady Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22902
Musician and composer Greg Howard plays original and well-known jazz, rock and world music compositions on the amazing Chapman Stick. The Stick is an electric stringed instrument, played by tapping on the strings with both hands, which makes it possible to play bass, chords and melody all at once. Greg is a defining voice on the instrument, with nine CD releases, thousands of performances, and two books on how to play The Stick to his credit. Greg is also an adept improviser, known for crafting spontaneous compositions that explore the sonic diversity of The Stick, in a manner reminiscent of Keith Jarrett’s solo piano improvisations, but with an expansive electronic flair.
Joining Howard in a variety of duo, trio and quartet settings are John D’earth on trumpet, Darrell Rose on African percussion and James McLaughlin on drums. The concert will be opened by Fredericksburg-based Stick soloist Rob Martino, whose “One Cloud” YouTube video has garnered almost half a million views. Rob plays progressive rock and original instrumentals.
